A Passion for Fine Art Photographs

Born outside Philadelphia, Gene discovered photography at twelve, earning his first camera through persistence and curiosity. What began as fascination quickly became a lifelong pursuit—one rooted in observation, process, and the quiet discipline of craft. His studies in photography and printmaking at Antonelli, along with early mentorship in professional portrait work, grounded him in both technique and visual storytelling. At the same time, he immersed himself in black-and-white film, working with medium and large formats and printing by hand in his own darkroom.

Gene’s work gradually moved beyond conventional portraiture toward a more expressive, tactile form of image-making. Drawn to alternative processes, he explored hand-applied emulsions on watercolor paper, embracing imperfection and material as part of the final image. Time spent photographing in Philadelphia and New York City further shaped his sensibility, exposing him to a range of artistic voices and disciplines.

Early rejection from galleries became a catalyst rather than a setback—pushing him inward to refine both his philosophy and his visual language. This period of reflection led to exhibitions across the East Coast in the late 1990s, including his “Age of Innocence” series, a deeply human body of work centered on individuals in a convalescent home.

Now based in Arizona, Gene continues to work primarily in black-and-white film, drawn to its depth, restraint, and timelessness. His images reflect an ongoing dialogue between material, process, and the search for something quietly enduring.
